Summer or Winter Sessions

Students in good academic standing can take classes over the winter and summer breaks at any Rutgers campus or at another institution. Consult with an adviser before selecting courses, especially if you want courses taken in Newark or Camden to count towards your major. Grades from courses taken outside of Rutgers University do not transfer into the transcript and GPA.

Coursework during Summer/Winter Session at Rutgers

•    The grade earned and credit will appear on the transcript and in the GPA.
•    Summer courses at Newark/Camden must be pre-approved by the advising dean of your class.

Coursework during Summer/Winter Session outside of Rutgers

•    Students must earn a C or better in order for the credit to transfer.
•    Grades earned at institutions other than Rutgers University don’t appear on the transcript and aren’t counted in GPA.

Courses eligible to be taken outside of RU during the summer include:

•    first and second year courses of the engineering curriculum
•    sophomore level introductory major courses.

Students are discouraged from taking two math courses in one summer especially if you are having academic difficulty. Deans in the Office of Academic Services (B100) review these cases. Junior and Senior level major courses in engineering may not be taken outside of RU without approval from the undergraduate director in your department.

Courses eligible to be taken outside of RU during the winter sessions are:

  • general electives
  • humanities/social science electives
  • non-STEM courses
  • non-writing courses

Best Practices for Students

  • Don't take more than six or seven credits over the summer and take one per each summer session. SoE students are allowed to take up to nine credits in a summer.

  • Don’t take more than three credits over the winter.

  • Don’t take any science, engineering, math, statistics, or writing courses during a winter session. Two exceptions to this are Introduction to Experimentation and Scientific & Technical Writing.

Registration

Students must submit a preauthorization form before they can register for any summer or winter session course. Your advising dean will inform you within two weeks about whether the course has been pre-approved.

Preauthorization Form

For Rutgers campuses, register with WebReg. If you have any questions or problems registering, contact your respective advising teams.

  • For courses from NJ Community Colleges, please refer to NJ Transfer for course equivalencies.

  • For courses from out-of-state schools or other 4-year colleges, please make sure to submit the detailed course description or syllabus which can be obtained from the school's website or copied from the course catalog at that school.

  • Courses from Rutgers Newark or Camden use different course numbers from Rutgers-New Brunswick, please seek advising if you are not sure which courses you need to take. Here is a list of common STEM courses offered at Camden and Newark and their equivalency to the courses at Rutgers-New Brunswick.

If you are a dismissed student or otherwise not affiliated with Rutgers, you may take summer courses as a visiting student through the Summer Session Office.
