Summer Counselor Opportunities

The School of Engineering hosts a set of programs at Rutgers University to increase awareness and appreciation of engineering, technology, science, and mathematics. Mentor and counselor opportunities are available for current students.

Engineers of the Future

EOF is a program for incoming Rutgers Engineering freshmen who qualify for the State's Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program. Students take a full complement of academic courses that are similar to the engineering first-year experience and participate in tutoring, group projects, and academic enrichment activities.

Counselors live in the residence hall with the students helping to develop a sense of community, and promote academic endeavors.

Counselors are required to attend a one-day training, a one-week training prior to the start of the program and will be in residence full-time from June 16, 2025 - July 26, 2025.

Compensation: Room and board for the duration of the position, as well as a competitive salary

NJ Governor’s School of Engineering & Technology and Rutgers Honors Engineering Experience

Counselors support the NJ Governor’s School of Engineering & Technology (GSET), a state-sponsored, three-week intensive summer residency program for academically talented rising high school seniors, and a one-week Engineering exploration residential program, the Rutgers Honors Engineering Experience (RHEx).

Counselors are known as Residential Teaching Assistants (RTAs) as they are expected to take a very active role in the educational experience of the students and a leadership role in the dorm life portion of the scholars’ experience. Counselors/RTAs serve as co-advisors for the students' research, help to plan supplementary learning and social experiences, and guide the students in activities that demonstrate engineers’ contributions to society.

Counselors are required to attend a one-day training session in the spring. The staff will be in residence full time from June 16, 2025 - July 26, 2025 for one-week training and preparation through the duration of the programs.

Compensation: Room and board for the duration of the position, as well as a competitive salary

The Academy at Rutgers for Girls in Engineering and Technology

Counselors support The Academy at Rutgers for Girls in Engineering & Technology (TARGET), a summer, commuter program designed for middle school and high school students to increase awareness and familiarize them with career opportunities within engineering. Counselors in this program propel the mission to eradicate the negative stereotypes commonly associated with women’s ability to pursue careers in math and science related fields.

Counselors are known as Team Leaders, as they actively promote collaboration among the student groups working on the engineering tasks and projects. Team Leaders live on campus, while developing and overseeing classroom, lab, and recreational activities within the scope of engineering.

All Team Leaders are required to attend a one-day training in the spring, as well as a one-week training prior to the start of the program. TARGET Team Leaders will be in residence from June 16, 2025 - July 26, 2025.

Compensation: Room and board for the duration of the position, as well as a competitive salary.
