Pass/No Credit Courses

Engineering students can choose to designate an elective course as a Pass/No Credit course. Only one course per semester can be designated as P/NC and this must be requested through an online form by the designated deadline. Grades of A, B, and C correspond to Pass, and D and F correspond to No Credit. A No Credit cannot count towards anything for graduation.

Eligible and non-eligible coursework for Pass/No Credit

Pass/No Credit can be requested for h/ss electives, technical electives, and general electives.

The following coursework is not eligible for Pass/No Credit.

  • Courses taught within a students’ major such as department electives
  • English courses before Expository Writing
  • Math courses before Calculus
  • Required courses
  • Substitutes for required courses
  • Required engineering General Education courses like calculus, chemistry, physics, and statics

Students taking a course for Pass/No Credit must take all quizzes and examinations and are subject to attendance requirements. It is also important to note that professors do not know which students, if any, are taking the course as Pass/No Credit. They submit the letter grade that you earn, and then the Registrar’s office converts that into either a Pass or No Credit, depending on the letter grade earned.

Students pursuing a minor should know that certain departments do not honor Pass/No Credit courses for a minor.

Deciding to Request a Pass/No Credit

A grade of B (or better) looks better on a transcript than a PASS since that could mean the student received a C or C+. If the Pass will keep you on the Dean's List or make you graduate with highest honors as opposed to high honors for example, then the PASS grade is a good idea. Otherwise, let the letter grade stand. The instructor will not know that the student has elected to take a class Pass/No Credit, and will submit the appropriate letter grade earned. The registration system makes the appropriate conversion.

Requesting Pass/No Credit

In order to request a Pass/No Credit, students must submit the online Pass/No Credit form. The last day to request Pass/No Credit coincides with the last day to drop a course. There are no exceptions to this. For summer courses, the online form must be submitted by the end of the first week of classes.

Pass/No Credit Form

Due to COVID-19, students who took classes from spring '20 through spring '21 had option to make any of their courses Pass/No Credit. This can still be done retroactively. These are distinct from the two Pass/ No Credit courses students are regularly allowed to take.
