Prerequisites

Coursework for engineering students is sequential and builds upon each other and therefore, classes must be taken in a specific order. Core classes require students to pass with a D or better in order to move to the next level.

Reference the Schedule of Classes to find prerequisites.

Reference the table below for some common sophomore SoE coursework and the required prerequisites needed to take them.

Course Course Number Prerequisites
Intro to Biomedical Engineering 14:125:201 Calculus II and Physics IB
Chemical Engineering Analysis I 14:155:201 Calculus II and Chemistry II
Mechanics of Solids 14:180:243 Calc 2 and Eng’g Mechanics-Statics
Principles of EE I 14:332:221/223 Calculus II and Physics IB
Digital Logic Design 14:332:231/233 Calculus II and Physics IB
Engineering Mechanics-Dynamics 14:440:222 Calculus II and Engineering Mechanics-Statics
Mechanics of Materials 14:650:291 Engineering Mechanics-Statics

If you feel prepared to take a course without the prerequisite, you can request a prerequisite override. Contact the undergraduate director to begin the request process. For liberal arts courses, contact that department.

If your undergraduate director approves your request, they must issue a prerequisite override approval to you in writing. Submit the course information along with your written approval by filling out the Special Registration Request form.

Learn more about SoE’s procedures for special registration.

Corequisites

A corequisite means that a course must be taken at the same time as another course. For example, Computer Architecture and Computer Architecture Lab are corequisites. They must be taken concurrently.
