Readmission After Dismissal

Under certain conditions students that have been dismissed from the School of Engineering (SOE) can apply for readmission. In order to be readmitted into the SOE you must demonstrate that you have overcome the challenges that led to your dismissal and that you can succeed in your major.

In order to demonstrate the latter, you must choose appropriate courses and earn grades that meet the readmission criteria of a 3.0 GPA or higher without any D or F grades. The complete academic record in STEM courses, major GPA, cumulative GPA, and related academic deficiencies are considered by the Scholastic Standing Committee.

International students must act very quickly if academically dismissed from SoE. In order to maintain your visa, international students must always be actively enrolled in school. Upon dismissal, you must be admitted into another institution immediately. If you do not do this, you will have to return to your home country. The first thing you should do is meet with your ISSS advisors at Rutgers Global right away to discuss your visa status.

Important Notes for Readmission

  • Students can only be readmitted once to the SOE. Once a student is dismissed for a second time, they must pursue education outside of Rutgers University.

  • Students must apply for readmission through the school that dismissed them.

  • In order to be eligible for readmission, students must be able to reasonably reach a cumulative GPA of 2.0 with a maximum of 15 credits AND must have a certain minimum Rutgers GPA at the time of readmission:

  • 1.600 cumulative GPA if it is based on 1 – 30 credits in the GPA

  • 1.800 cumulative GPA if it is based on 31 – 60 credits in the GPA

  • 2.000 cumulative GPA if it is based on more than 60 credits in the GPA, and major GPA must be at least 1.900.

Course Requirements

In order to be considered for readmission, students must take engineering, math, or science courses required for your major (excluding economics and other h/ss courses).

Refer to the Course Selection Guidelines for more details. If you have questions about your course selection or major eligibility, contact your advisor or advising dean for advice.

Readmission into an Engineering Major After a Fall Dismissal

Depending on your cumulative GPA and number of completed credits, it may be possible to take 12 credits during spring and summer semesters including nine credits of required STEM courses without any Ds or Fs. Students can attend a community college or 4-year institution to bring their GPA up to a 3.0 or better. You must have a minimum RU cumulative GPA at the time of readmission.

Readmission into an Engineering Major After a Spring Dismissal

Depending on your cumulative GPA and number of completed credits, it may be possible to take six to eight credits of required STEM courses. Students can do this during the summer at Rutgers to bring their GPA up to a 3.0 or better without any Ds or Fs. You must have a minimum RU cumulative GPA at the time of readmission.

If you choose to take more than six credits over the entire summer, you must still bring your GPA up to 3.0+ without any Ds or Fs. Please consult with your advising dean and choose your courses and course load carefully.

Another option is to attend a community college between summer and fall to bring your GPA up to a 3.0+ without any Ds or Fs. Students can take 12 or more credits, including nine credits of required STEM courses and no more than eight credits in the summer. You must have a minimum RU cumulative GPA at the time of readmission.

SOE does not recommend taking more than 8 credits in one summer session.

Dismissed and Want to Prepare Transferring Out of SoE

Dismissed students who can reasonably reach a 2.0 cumulative GPA in 15 credits can apply to take non-engineering (001) courses the following semester to prepare for transfer. STEM courses are not allowed. This will be the terminal semester, with no opportunity for readmission back into SoE.

If you choose this option, take summer or winter classes and earn below a 2.0 GPA, you become ineligible for the terminal non-engineering semester at the SoE.

To apply for this option, you must meet with a dean or advisor during dismissal advising (refer to your dismissal notice) or submit a readmission application below.

Readmission Application Including Transcripts

To apply for Readmission, fill out the online Application for Readmission form. If you attended a school or college other than Rutgers in order to prepare for readmission, please include your transcripts.

Applications are due either January 1 or June 1 and will be reviewed once the committee has proof of your final grades.

Questions should be submitted to Dean Priscilla Calderon at priscilla.calderon@soe.rutgers.edu

FAQs

What if I don’t have the GPA listed above? You are not eligible for readmission. Our advice is to attend community college for 2 semesters, do well and then apply to a brand new 4-year school where you would start with a fresh GPA.

What if I take more than the recommended credits, but don't make the 3.0? You are still expected to earn a 3.0 GPA if you choose to take more than the recommended credits. Choose your credit load wisely.
