It is with great sadness that we announce the death of William H. Bauer who passed away on February 16, 2015 at the age of 95. Born January 29, 1920, in South River, Dr. Bauer graduated from Rutgers College in 1942 with a degree in ceramic engineering. He earned a master’s in 1947 and doctorate degree in 1950 from Rutgers, both in physics. He influenced many lives as a professor of ceramic engineering at Rutgers School of Engineering from 1947 until his retirement in 1993. He was also president of Queens Laboratories in Piscataway and vice president of L&M Surco Manufacturing in South River, and served as technical advisor to ITT in Nutley.
Dr. Bauer is a former president of the Rutgers Alumni Association, where his commitment earned him a Loyal Son of Rutgers award. In 2004, he and his wife Barbara received the Rutgers Medal of Philanthropic Excellence and, in 2014, they were honored with the first 1869 Legacy Award for their generous support of Rutgers Athletics. Dr. Bauer had a long and distinguished military career, serving in the Pacific during World Warr II and later the Army Air Corps Reserve, retiring as major general in 1978.
