Honors College student Jack Maniar is poised to earn his BS degree in electrical and computer engineering (ECE) while pursuing a master's degree as part of SoE's accelerated graduate program. As the internal vice president of the Rutgers Engineering Honors Council (REHC) he helps engineering students connect with each other, industry professionals, and the community, while as a member of the Rutgers Water Polo Team, he loves repping the Scarlet Knights.
Why Rutgers?
Honestly, I chose Rutgers for convenience as it was close to home and affordable. But it has turned into a place I will be sad to leave. Thinking about graduating and leaving is something I'm really trying hard to avoid before it happens.
What stands out from your Honors College experience?
The other students in the Honors College are what stand out. I've lived with some of the most interesting and charismatic people at Rutgers and am so glad the Honors College has brought us together.
What do you like best about your ECE major?
I like how big the classes are. No matter what class I take, I will always recognize at least one person or meet someone new.
Have you been involved in any research projects?
I work in the cyber-physical systems lab under the direction of ECE Professor Dario Pompili. I'm currently working on embedded systems research on the topic of early detection of heartbeat anomalies.
Do you have a favorite mentor?
Assistant Dean and Honors College Director Jean Patrick Antoine has been such a guiding figure during my college career. He's been with me since I registered for my first classes. Always encouraging yet reasonable, he clearly wants us to do well.
What about internships?
I'm currently working at Inflexion Point in Red Bank as an electrical engineering intern. I'm assisting its cybersecurity and IT Support division to help improve response times while keeping critical information safe.
What has surprised you the most about Rutgers Engineering?
What surprised me the most was realizing that there isn't just one path to success. I was surprised by how many opportunities students have to explore different fields and gain experience in those they really like.
Do you have any advice for future students?
Try everything you can. There are really so many clubs, organizations, and free events that you should take advantage of. College is one of the best environments to meet new people and try new things, so don't miss out on this opportunity.
Have you given any thought to your post-graduate plans?
I'm planning on getting my master's in electrical engineering with the 4+1 track at Rutgers before entering the workforce.
What do you think you'll miss the most after you graduate?
The veggie dream sandwich from Woody's cafe.
What three words best describe your SoE experience so far?
Eventful. Rewarding. Fun.
