MAE Professor Receives International Award for Excellence in Thermal Science and Engineering
Every four years the prestigious William Begell Medal is awarded to a leading internationally recognized researcher whose lifetime achievements have advanced thermal science, heat transfer, and engineering.
Yogesh Jaluria, Board of Governors Professor and Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, received the award at the William Begell Medal Award Ceremony on August 3, at the 18th International Heat Transfer Conference in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. He also presented a keynote address at the conference.
Established in 2009, the Begell Medal quickly became one of the most prestigious in the field. It memorializes the late chemical-nuclear engineer, Columbia University professor, and publisher William Begell, who passionately advocated the sharing of scientific data internationally. Scholarly publisher Begell House continues to share this mission.
"It is an honor to be recognized by the international community for my work and for the impact it has had," Jaluria says. "The award is also personally meaningful to me because it honors Bill Begell, who was a good friend and whose company published two of my books.
"It's also an important recognition of my lifetime accomplishments in research and significant contributions to the international community in thermal sciences," says Jaluria, a widely published author and co-author of articles, books, and book chapters.
A Pioneering Leader and Inspiration to the SoE Community
Throughout his career, Jaluria's pioneering work has bridged fundamental thermal science with practical engineering applications. In the process, it has explored a broad spectrum of basic and applied areas from natural convection, fires, and thermal management of electronics to advanced materials processing, energy systems, computational heat transfer, and environmental processes.
Ultimately, his work has led to a fuller understanding of how heat may be predicted, controlled, and optimized across these varied applications.
In addition to his scholarly contributions and research discoveries, Jaluria is a tireless leader in the international thermal sciences community, serving, for example, as editor-in-chief of the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer and as the founding president of the American Society of Thermal and Fluids Engineers.
He is a recipient of the 2002 Max Jakob Memorial Award, the highest international recognition in heat transfer, from ASME and the AIChE, as well as awards such as the A.V. Luikov Award, the Holley Medal, the Kern Award, and is an honorary member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Physical Society (APS), and the American Society of Thermal and Fluids Engineers (ASTFE).
