Alumnus JB Kim to Deliver School of Engineering Convocation Address

JB Kim will share his insights with the Class of 2025 as the keynote speaker at Rutgers’ School of Engineering’s 2025 Convocation on May 16, when he hopes “to tell a story that will be both entertaining and encouraging for the students and their families.”

When JB Kim graduated with degrees in mechanical engineering and computer science in 2002, he knew that all he’d learned as a student was just a beginning – and that he was well prepared to continue to learn and apply what he’d learned to identify and solve a variety of problems.

Recognizing that, he pursued a career as a quantitative developer, trader, and researcher before founding his own Florida-based trading company, nVerses Capital, where he and his team manage systematic investment portfolios.

“I’m excited,” Kim says. “I was completely surprised when Dean Alberto Cuitiño – who had been my professor – called to ask me to speak. My first reaction was ‘I’m sure you have other more qualified candidates.’” Kim says his firm belief that the possibilities are infinite for the school’s new graduates will be the spirit of message.

Cuitiño explains, “Kim has been successful since graduating, and has the mindset to use and apply engineering in his field of finance. He has been determined to set his own trajectory by drawing on all that he absorbed as a Rutgers Engineering student and applying it to flourish in one of the many diverse and exciting fields open to engineering students.”

Supporting a Future Generation of Engineers

“Giving back is only natural for me,” Kim says, which is why he remains engaged with the School of Engineering. He is in the final year of an initial three-year committed endowment fund that supports student interns at Rutgers Wireless Information Network Laboratory, or WINLAB that has been “a great and amazing experience.”
