First Semester Course Registration
Fall Registration
The first year consists of required courses--or a common core curriculum--in general chemistry, applied physics, college writing, calculus and Introduction to Computers for Engineers, as well as a humanities/social science elective, and Introduction to Engineering, which presents the various engineering majors offered at Rutgers.
Creating Your Schedule
With the assistance of the First-Year team, School of Engineering (SOE) students register for their classes during New Student Orientation (NSO), held the summer before officially starting fall classes. SOE first year students must register for one of the NSO Engineering Priority days.
Information about self-registration will be provided via virtual summer squad meetings and through an online CANVAS course entitled: SOE 2028 Advising. Early in the summer before your first semester, all students receive an invitation to access this online CANVAS course. This remote, asynchronous course provides information about the tools needed to register for classes, including a preregistration form.
When creating your schedule, you’ll consider placement test results, registration forms, any AP, IB or other credit or college courses taken, and any courses required by programs or groups at Rutgers of which you are a part.
When Can I Change My Schedule?
If students wish to make changes to their schedule after NSO, they will have access to virtual drop-in advising hours. WebReg will reopen on August 15th for students who have received a check mark for completing the Academic Planning and Advising enrollment step on the myRutgers dashboard. The check mark is earned after the student completes ALL the modules on the SOE Academic Advising CANVAS course.
On August 15th and into the Add/Drop period (first two weeks of the semester), you will be able to change class sections/meeting times and add or drop courses using WebReg, provided you completed the SOE Academic Advising course. Be sure to familiarize yourself with add/drop dates in order to avoid tuition charges and course withdrawals on your Rutgers’ transcript.
Do NOT email or ask the office to change your class meeting times or switch sections. However, if you notice any mistakes on your placement test results or AP, IB or other credits, please email firstyear@soe.rutgers.edu. Make sure to include your full name and 9-digit RUID in the email. Visit the academic credits page, if you need more information about AP credits or transfer college credits.
Be aware of important dates and times (this will be updated during the summer) related to deadlines, summer squad meetings, add/drop advising, and the Fall Kickoff event at the start of the semester. If you still have questions after reviewing the information above, please contact firstyear@soe.rutgers.edu.
