The Governor's School of New Jersey in Engineering & Technology at Rutgers offers an intensive summer residential program to talented and motivated high school students. In July, more than 60 Governor's School scholars, as well as various School of Engineering faculty and staff, attended an Executive Leadership Panel on STEM and Public Service.

SoE's Dean Alberto Cuitiño and Assistant Dean and Director of the Governor's School Jean Patrick Antoine, welcomed the participants to the afternoon event on July 29 that featured a panel moderated by New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education Margo Chaly.

Distinguished panelists included New Jersey Department of Health Commissioner of Health Raynard Washington and the state's Chief Innovation Officer Dave Cole who shared insights on topics ranging from the AI era's emerging opportunities for government, healthcare, and public policy to skills the student scholars might need to build to put future technological applications at the service of the public good.

"The event," says Antoine, "embodies the School of Engineering's—and the NJ Governor's School's—abiding commitment to engaging young scholars in hands-on engineering and technology while learning about future career prospects.

"This year, we were especially pleased to host the Executive Leadership Panel, which gave the students a real-world look at how STEM studies, science, and technology can improve lives by solving some of society's most pressing problems."

Since 2001 when Rutgers began hosting the New Jersey Governor's School of Engineering and Technology, students have collaborated on—and presented—research projects, attended workshops, visited local corporations, and engaged with professionals as well as Rutgers professors.
