MSE Professor Named ACerS Fellow
Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Professor Ashutosh Goel was selected as a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS). His elevated stature will be recognized at the ACerS Honors and Awards Banquet during its annual meeting in October.
Since its establishment in 1898, ACerS has grown to include more than 100,000 members from 35 countries—making it the largest professional society serving the ceramic industry. This grade of Fellow, which is awarded to 15 or fewer members each year, signifies outstanding contributions to ceramic science and technology.
According to MSE Distinguished Professor and Chair Lisa Klein, "Ashutosh Goel is receiving this honor for his scholarship, in large part carried out since he joined the MSE department, where he has helped establish Rutgers as a world-class glass and ceramics research hub. He has also contributed to advancements in nuclear waste management and creating a well-trained and skilled workforce for the global glass and ceramic industry."
Goel—a member of ACerS since 2013—has served the society in various capacities, from chairman of its bioceramics division and organizer and co-organizer of several conferences and workshops on glass science to his current role as the associate editor of its flagship journals.
"I am grateful to ACerS for this deeply meaningful honor and proud to be part of a community that continues to advance materials innovation for the benefit of the world. What makes this recognition especially meaningful is that it comes from a community of peers and colleagues whose work I have admired throughout my career."
For the past ten years, he recalls that he "has had the privilege of contributing to the advancement of glass science and engineering while helping to train the next generation of scientists and engineers."
He adds, "I view this distinction not as an individual accomplishment, but as a reflection of the collective efforts of the outstanding students, postdoctoral researchers, collaborators, and mentors who have been part of my journey."
And according to Goel, it's an honor that has reinforced his commitment to pushing the boundaries of materials research, fostering collaborations, and ensuring that student engineers gain the knowledge and skills needed to make a lasting impact on society.
