Engineering Wellness

Apply engineering principles to personal well-being. Understand stress. Improve your quality of life.

Engineer a Better You

Engineers are trained to understand complex systems, identify problems, and develop solutions. Engineering Wellness™ is a Rutgers School of Engineering course designed to help students apply those same principles to understanding and improving their personal well-being.

Through engineering concepts and models, students explore the relationship between physical and mental health, the factors that influence stress, and the role of personal behaviors and environments in shaping quality of life.

Rather than approaching wellness solely through a traditional health perspective, the course emphasizes applying engineering principles, analytical thinking, and problem-solving strategies to better understand the challenges of everyday life.

Learn to think about wellness through an engineering lens.

Engineering Wellness Course Information

Engineering Wellness | 14:125:211

Engineering Wellness introduces students to the application of engineering principles to personal well-being and quality of life. Students examine the mind-body relationship, stress, psychological flow, and the use of engineering models to evaluate challenges and explore approaches to wellness.

The course combines engineering theory with practical applications, guest lectures, and a group project that challenges students to apply engineering problem-solving methods to a real-world wellness scenario.

Through the group project, students analyze a case study, identify contributing factors using force diagrams and root cause analysis, and develop experimental plans and corrective actions.

Guest lectures introduce additional perspectives on wellness, including the biological, psychological, and environmental factors that influence mental health.
