Placement Tests for Admitted Students

All newly admitted first-year students are required to take Rutgers University's placement tests. The tests are designed to provide information about your English and math skills. Test results are used to place students in the appropriate courses and sections.

Most tests are administered online and can be completed from home or in a quiet environment with a reliable internet connection. Complete your placement tests as early as possible to enable your fall course planning and registration. Online testing must be completed within 30 days of confirming your enrollment.

Please read the conditions below on each of the testing subjects for engineering students.

English

Students who have completed the following are exempt from the English placement test.

  • Students with an Evidence based Reading and Writing SAT score of 650 or higher or an ACT Reading score of 28 or higher will automatically be placed into Expository Writing.
  • Students who took the AP exam in English Lang/Comp or English Lit/Comp as a junior in high school and scored 4 or 5.
  • Students who took Rutgers Expository Writing class through their high school.

All SAT, ACT or AP scores must be sent to Rutgers to be exempt from the English online placement test. If we do not have your scores, you must take the test. Scores received after you have taken the placement test will supersede the results of the placement test.

Math

Students who have completed the following are exempt from the Math placement test.

  • Students who took the AP exam in Calculus AB or Calculus BC in their junior year in high school and scored 4 or 5.

Please note that SAT-I or SAT-II Math scores do NOT allow exemptions from the Math test and we do NOT grant exceptions on potential scores.

All AP scores must be sent to Rutgers to be exempt from the Math online placement test. If we do not have your scores, you must take the test. AP exam scores received after you have taken the placement test will supersede the results of the placement test.

Foreign Languages

Students that want to study foreign languages at an advanced level must take the respective world language placement test. Engineering students who will not take any foreign language or want to begin a new language do not need to take a world language placement test.

Find detailed information about world language placement tests.

Important Note

Senior year AP, IB exams, or college transfer credits do NOT exempt a first-year student from Rutgers Placement Testing.

First-year students entering the School of Engineering at Rutgers-New Brunswick to complete an associates degree concurrent with their high school degree are required to take the placement tests unless they meet the exemptions listed above.
