Future ‘Smart Cities’ Should be Super-Connected, Green and Resilient

Rutgers’ Narayan Mandayam leads forward-thinking research on how to improve the quality of life in cities and protect our planet

When Superstorm Sandy lashed New Jersey in 2012, Narayan B. Mandayam lost power in his East Brunswick home for five days.

The power outage also affected cellular service in his area when backup generators that powered the cell towers went down.

Doubling U.S. Energy Productivity

Rutgers Engineering is partnering with companies, other universities, industrial research organizations, and national laboratories on a $140 million project to develop breakthrough technologies to boost domestic energy productivity and energy efficiency by 20 percent in five years. Members of the RAPID Institute (Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment) will focus on new technologies that maximize processes at the molecular level to save energy with every chemical reaction.
