Distinguished Alumni Awards - 1992

Prof. P.K. Kaw

Prof. P.K. Kaw

Dr. Pradhiman K. Kaw was born on January 15, 1948. He had a brilliant academic record securing first position in his Master’s degree. He completed his Ph.D. degree at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1966 in a span of 2 years and had the distinction of being the first student to be conferred a doctoral degree by the Institute.

He joined the University of Princeton as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in 1967 where he discovered the phenomenon of laser induced anomalous heating of plasma and filamentation instability. He subsequently joined the research staff of the University of Princeton in the year 1969. Dr. Kaw came back to India in 1971 as an Associate Professor at the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad and became Professor in 1974. Concurrently, he held the positions of National Lecturership, Visiting Professorship at Japan Society for Promotion of Science, Consultant at University of California, Los Angeles and at the University of Cornell.

He was involved with the setting up of Institute for Plasma Research – a National level Institute- in 1986. Under his leadership as the Founder Director, the Institute is recognised for its work in several frontier areas of research in Plasma Physics.

Dr. Kaw was first to demonstrate the coalescence instability in a chain of magnetic islands, critical to Tokamak Plasmas. He investigated the stability of dissipative drift waves in sheared magnetic fields, which led to the crucial re-examination of the toroidal effects in drift instabilities. In his more recent work, he has found novel non-abelian plasma oscillations in quark-gluon plasmas- a subject of considerable interest in high-energy heavy ion collision experiments.

A number of honours, titles and distinctions have been bestowed on him, including Honorary Doctor of Science by the Gent University of Belgium in 1991. He is a Fellow/Member of several national and international Science Societies/Academies and Committees.

During his distinguished career as a scientist, Dr. Kaw has written over 150 research papers. He is presently the Associate Editor of Journal of Plasma Physics (U.K.). In recognition of his distinguished contributions to the growth of science in this country, he was awarded Padma Shri in 1985 and Bhatnagar Price in 1986.

In honouring Dr. Pradhiman K. Kaw, we recognise the conspicuous contributions made by an alumnus of I.I.T. Delhi as an outstanding scientist, an able administrator and a planner, who has carried a name for himself in the international scientific community.

Dr. Jai N. Gupta

Dr. Jai N. Gupta

Dr. Jai N. Gupta was born on 2nd February, 1946. He received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1967. He completed his Master's degree from Queen's University, Ontario, Canada in 1971 and the Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1974, both in Electrical Engineering. He also completed his Master of Business Administration from George Washington University in 1978.

Dr. Gupta joined MITRE Corporation in 1974. After gaining valuable R & D experience, he founded in 1979 a company in U.S.A. Known as EER Systems by bringing together a unique team of system engineers. Today he directs 800 people of this company, which has played a very important role in supporting and implementing major programmes of NASA, the Department of Defence, and Federal Aviation Administration. These programmes include: the Cosmic Background Explorer, the Broadband X-ray Telescope Experiment and the Gamma Ray Observatory.

Under his leadership, EER Systems has become one of the most successful small businesses in America. Clients from throughout U.S.A. and abroad turn to EER Systems for total life support in the areas of transportation, environment, energy and overall program management. EER Systems has a brilliant record of achievements and amongst its recent successes is the award of a contract to provide the launch vehicle and services for the United Nations first orbital space launch and recovery system. The firm's Conestoge Rocket will be used for the NASA sponsord Commercial Experiment Transporter (COMET) Program. During a distinguished career, Dr. Gupta has published a large number of research papers and technical reports related to energy and aerospace technologies. He has served as a refree for several professional journals of repute. Dr. Gupta was the President of the International Society of Productivity enhancement for over a year.

The human qualities in Dr. Gupta and his concern for social values have motivated him to take up a leadership position in the building of a new Cultural Centre in Northern Virginia which aims to foster the development of arts, drama and religious activities. Dr. Gupta has also sponsored scholarships for deserving Indian students in U.S.A.

In honouring Dr. Jai N. Gupta, we recognize the conspicuous contributions made by an alumnus of I.I.T. Delhi as an outstandingtechnologist, an able administrator and above all, a humanist who has earned a name for himself in the international community.

Mr. Vinod Khosla

Mr. Vinod Khosla

Mr. Vinod Khosla was born on January 28, 1955 at Poona. He received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1976. He obtained a Master's degree in Biomedical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, and MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business.

He exhibited innovative abilities, deep insight into Computer Technology and rare enterpreneurial talent and vision during his stay at Stanford and won the outstanding student recommendation of the Dean of the Graduate school of Business. He started his professional career with Daisy, a pioneer in the field of Computer aided Engineering. Three years later, Mr. Khosla developed the concept of 'creation of general purpose desktop computers based on "open" technologies' which proved to be a major breakthrough, and thus seeds of Sun Microsystems were sown. He developed the business plans of Sun Microsystems and assembled its founding team. As the Chief Executive Officer, he guided the growth of Sun Microsystems into one of the world's most successful computer companies of 1980's, with 12,000 employees and 4 billion dollar sales. Its work-station systems and other computer products, are used world-wide in universities, R & D laboratories and industry today.

In 1987, Mr. Khosla decided to turn into a venture capitalist. He has helped to start over 20 technology companies since then. Mr. Khosla is one of the nine General Partners of Kleiner Perkins, USA who make investments in high technology companies.

He is on the Board of Trustees at Carnegie Mellon University, and has served, for several years, on the Board at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. In recognition of his outstanding achievement he has been invited to be the member on the Boards of several companies including G.D. Corp., The 3DO Company, Spectrum Holobyte, Nexgen Microsystems, and Picture Tel.

Mr. Yogesh Jaluria

Mr. Yogesh Jaluria

Prof. Yogesh Jaluria was born on 8th September 1949 at Nabha, Punjab. He received Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1970 standing first in the graduating class. He obtained M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University in 1972 and 1974 respectively. Professor Jaluria currently occupies the position of Distinguished Professor at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, USA, a rare distinction. Before joining Rutgers, he worked at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (1976-80) and AT & T Bell Laboratories, Princeton (1974-76).

During past two decades Prof. jaluria has extensively researched in several diverse areas, particularly natural and mixed convection heat transfer, enclosure fires, fire spread, thermal processing of materials, thermal plumes, design of thermal systems, computational heat transfer, energy systems and food processing. His work on discrete heat sources located on an otherwise insulated vertical plate is very first study on stimulating microelectronics cooling. Researchers in the development of zone model for the fire research have benefited greatly by his incisive research. Prof. Jaluria was able to utilize his heat transfer studies in stratified media in conjuction with energy storage-tank and solar pond applications to apply directly to fire dynamics in rooms. His more recent interest has been in heat transfer studies in material processing and simulation of food materials on the basis of non-newtonian mechanics.

His work has been extensively supported by Federal agencies, such as national Science foundation and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, by the State of New Jersey and by industry. He has also interacted with several industries and research centers in these research areas.

Prof. Jaluria has written over 125 resaerch papers including 84 in archival journals and 10 chapters in books. He has about 70 other publications, presentations and technical reports. He has two patents in materials processing. He is the author of three graduate level books and an undergraduate text book. all these books have received outstanding reviews. He is also co-editor of four conference proceedings.

Prof. Jaluria has received several honours and awards including a Young Scientist Medal from the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and a certificate of recognition from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA. He has been invited as a Distinguished Lecturer to NATO Advanced Study Institutes and as Research Leader to NSF Workshop. He was invited as a Keynote Speaker to international conferences and as seminar speaker to many universities and research laboratories. He is an associate editor of the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer. He is also a member of the Editorial Advisory Board on number of international journals such as Numerical Heat Transfer, Sadhana etc.

He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a Member of the American Physical Society and the Combustion Institute.

Dr. Vijay P. Bhatkar

Vijay P. Bhatkar

Dr. Vijay Pandurang Bhatkar was born on 11th October 1946 at Muramba, Maharashtra. He received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Electrical Engineering Department from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1972. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering from Nagpur University in 1965 and Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from M.S.University, Baroda in 1968.

He has pioneered the national initiative in parallel supercomputing and was instrumental in developing the PARAM. He is now leading the mission to build the terra-flop architecture of massively parallel super computers. His contributions rank amongst those rare achievements whereby indigenous efforts have helped to build state-of-art technologies of extreme national importance, which has an impact on both the engineering and social planes in India. His dedication in building C-DAC to its current level of self reliance is noteworthy. His contributions to this national endeavour have been widely acknowledged not only by co-professionals but also by the print and visual media. He has significantly contributed in the electronic analog control system and absorption and upgradation of the control Bailey Technology of France and also played an active part in the evolution into Digital Distributed Control System.

He held the position of an Advisor in the Department of Electronics, Government of India from 1987 to 1989. During this period he was the National Project Director of the four UNDP Director of the Electronics Research and Development Centre, Trivandrum and Executive Director, KELTRON. He is a member of the State Electronics Development Commission of the State of Kerala.

During his distinguished carrer as a technologist, Dr. Bhatkar has authored over 70 research publications in parallel computing, artificial intelligence, distributed computer control and optimal control theory. He is on the Editorial Committee of Prallel Processing Letters, Member of the IEEE Technical Committee on Parallel Processing (TCPP) and Project Coordinator Indo-Russian ILTP Programme on Parallel Modelling and Visualization.

He is the recepient of several national awards, prominent amongst them being 'Electronics Man of the Year 1992' Award by Electronics Component Industries Association (ELCINA), the 'Ramlal Wadhwa Gold Medal Award 1992' by the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunicaion Engineers (IETE), National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) Merit Certificate Awards (1984-1985), Electronics Component Industries Association Award to ER & DC for the best research and development contribution in electronics (1983-84), FICCI Award for excellence in Research and Development in Electronics (1983) and Gold - Medal Award of the Indian Geo Technical Society (1976). Dr. Bhatkar is a member of several leading national and international professional societies and task forces, holding active positions in many of them.

Mr. Rajat Gupta

Mr. Rajat Gupta

Mr. Rajat Gupta was born at Maniktala in Culcutta. Mr. Gupta received his Bachelor of Technolgy degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1971 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He obtained MBA degree from the Harvard School of Business Administration in 1973.

Mr. Gupta joined Mckinsey & Company Incorporated in 1973 in its New York Office. He assumed leadership of its Scandinavian office in 1982 and joined its Chivago office in 1987. He assumed the role of Office Manager in Chicago in 1989 and was elected its Managing Director in 1994. Mckinsey & Company is one of the world's most influential and prestigious management consultancy firms having managment consultancy of $1.3 billion with 62 offices in 31 countries.

Mr. Gupta has a broad range of consulting experience with a variety of industrial organization, including companies in power generation, telecommunications, construction and transmission equipment. He has directed a number of projects in such companies to improve the overall performance, develop new product / market strategies and reduce costs and restructure the company, in a changing industry/competitive situation.

He is Member, Advisory Boards of Kellog School of Management and Harvard Business School Club. He is also a Member, Board of Directors, Northwestern Memorial Corporation. He is the first Managing Director of Mckinseys to have been born outside USA. He has a remarkable capacity for being helpful to people of all walks of life that come into contact with him, which is untarnished by he professional success. Mr. R.S. Pawar

Mr. R.S.Pawar

Mr. Rajendra Singh Pawar was born on 19th March 19th 1951. Mr. Pawar received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Electricaal Engineering in the year 1972 from the Indian Institute of technology, Delhi. Mr. Pawar started his professional career with Larsen & Turbo Limited in June 1972 as a Graduate Engineer Trainee. He was with DCM Limited from October 1972 to September 1976 first as Managmement Trainee and later as Assistant Product Manager. He was with Hindustan Computers Limited during the period September 1976 to july 1981 first as Regional Manager and later as Corporate Planning Manager.

Mr. Pawar founded National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) Limited in the year 1981 and currently is its Managing Director. It is a Publically listed Information Technology service Corporation. The company has offices in India, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. In India NIIT consisently ranked No. 1 in Information Technology Education and now No. 7 in the entire Indian Information Technoloy industry. NIIT became the first Indian Computer Training and Education Organisation to have received the International Quality Certification, ISO 9001 in July 1993. The overseas clients of NIIT include IBM, World Bank, Sun Microsystems, sears and others. NIIT is setting up subsidiaries in USA and Singapore to address the vast export markets in these regions.

Mr. Pawar has exhibited innovative abilities and deep insight into computer education. He has participated in major task forces and workgroups set up by the government of India in the areas of technical Manpower Development and Technology Development, playing a key role as industry spokesman. He is a top management consultant to organisations for architecting their automation strategies. Mr. Pawar is a member of several leading national professional societies of computer software education, holding active positions in many of them.

Mr. Y.C. Deveshwar

Mr. Y.C.Deveshwar

Mr. Yogesh Chander Deveshwar was born on 4th February 1947. He received his Bachelor of Technology Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1968. He obtained AMP Diploma from Harvard Business School, USA and also took Advanced Training in Hoteliering and Services at Cornell University, USA.

Mr. Deveshwar joined Indian Tobacco Company in 1968 as a Management pupil and in 1972 was appointed MBO Adviser to Corporate Headquarters in Calcutta. In 1974, he took over as Factory Manager in ITC’s Packaging and Printing Plant in Madras and was appointed General Manager of ITC’s Packaging and Printing Division in 1978. He joined the Company’s Board in 1984, taking charge of Welcomgroup (Hotel Division) as its Chairman. He pioneered the first private sector Degree Institute of Hotel Management - the Welcomgroup School of Hotel Administration, Manipal and received the Hotelier of the Year Award in 1986 for his outstanding contribution to this industry. In 1991 he took over as Chairman of ITC’s Indian Tobacco Division and Indian Leaf Tobacco Development Division.

In November 1991 he headed Air India on lien from ITC Ltd. As Chairman and Managing Director. In 1994 Mr. Deveshwar rejoined ITC and was appointed whole time Director and Vice Chairman of the Company. He took over as Chairman of ITC in January 1996. He received the Marketing Man of the Year Award in 1994.

Mr. Deveshwar is the Chairman of some of the ITC Group Companies – ITC Hotels Ltd., Bhadrachalam Paperboards Ltd. and ITC Agro-Tech Ltd. He is a Director on the Board of a number of Companies. He is also a member of the National Council of Confederation of Indian Industry and a member of the Board of Governors, IIT Kharagpur and was the Vice President of the Indian Chamber of Commerce.

Prof. S.R. Kulkarni

Mr. S.R. Kulkarni

Professor Shrinivas R. Kulkarni was born on 4th October 1956. He received the M.S. (Physics) in 1978 from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He obtained Ph.D. (Astronomy) in 1983 from University of California, Berkeley, USA.

Professor Kulkarni was a Post-Doctoral Fellow during 1983-85 in Radio Astronomy Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley. He was a Robert A. Millikan Fellow from 1985 to 1987 in Radio Astronomy Laboratory, Caltech, Pasadena, USA and became Professor in 1992. During 1992-95, he was on Visiting Positions for short durations to various Universities.

Prof. Kulkarni has made many pioneering contributions in the field of Astronomy. Prof. Kulkarni shot into prominence in the early 1980s with his discovery (as part of a team) of millisecond pulsars, which are collapsed neutron stars. This has revolutionized the field of pulsars since such short period pulsars provide an extremely accurate clock in the Universe. He is currently working Optical Interferometry. One of his recent results is the discovery of brown dwarfs, which are “stars” that do not have enough mass to have sufficiently high temperature at the centre in order to produce nuclear energy.

During a distinguished career, Prof. Kulkarni has published a large number of research papers, reviews, books and popular articles related to Astronomy, Neutron stars-Pulsars, X-Ray Binaries, High Resolution Imaging at Optical and IT wavelengths, Instrumentation-Signal Processing, Pulsar Timing and Interstellar Medium-Galactic and Extragalactic.

He has received numerous honours and awards. The list includes NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, Vaina Bappu Memorial Award, Helen B. Warner Prize, Alan T. Waterman Award and many others. He has been a member of various Professional Services such as R-Ray Timing Explorer Science Working Group, NASA; Arecibo Scientific Advisory Committee, NAIC; Hubble Space Telescope Strategy Panel STScl; VLTI Tiger Team, ESC; and NRAO Users Group.

In honouring Prof. Kulkarni, we recognise the outstanding contributions made by an alumnus of IIT Delhi as an Astronomer and Scientist who has earned a name in the international community and through achievement, brought glory to the name of the Institute.

Dr. Naren K. Gupta

Dr. Naren K. Gupta

Dr. Naren K. Gupta received his Bachelor of Technology Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1969 and was awarded the Director's Gold Medal and President's Gold Medal for the best performance in the B.Tech. graduating class of 1969 batch. He obtained MS degree from California Institute of Stanford University, USA.

After his Ph.D., Dr. Gupta joined the Systems Control Inc. wherin he made important contributions to the development of systems identification from test data which are being used even today in the automotive and aerospace industries . This work of Dr. Gupta won him the prestigious 1978 Donal P. Eckman Award of the American Control Council, awarded annually to the best control engineer under the age of 30 years. Dr. Gupta also began to develop financial and managerial skills in running a variety of projects and held a series of progressively higher management position

Presently, Dr. Gupta is the Vice Chairman of Wind River. Prior to this, Dr. Gupta founded Integrated Systems Inc. in 1980 with the moral support of his wife and was a director of ISI. It was here that the entrepreneurial talents of Dr. Gupta really blossomed. The company carried out studies and projects for the United States Government. The company devised a user-friendly package integrating together several analyses and design software tools. This led to MATRIX-X, the firsthigh level control design pakage, now in worldwide use. Dr. Gupta recognized the importance of high quality software tools for programming the micro controllers that are being used in a variety of increasingly sophisticated applications-not just calculators and watches but in fax machines, smart phones, ignition control in engines, cellular phones etc. The exponentially decreasing costs of integrated circuits coupled with thier exponentially growing capabilities have led to an explosuion in the applicaion of embedded micro controllers. Dr. Gupta's leadership abilities have put the company in the forefront of this wave. In addition to USA, the company has started its operation in Canada, Europe, Japan, Indai, Israel, and Korea. In 1996, the Company crossed a revenue of $ 100 million plus from less than 25 million in 1991. The company has received mention as one of the best companies of USA from various business magazines.

Mr. Vinod Mahendroo

Shri.Vinod Mahendroo

Shri Vinod Mahendroo received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1974. Subsequently he obtained his Master in Business Administration degree from the Graduate School of Business, Harvard University in 1978. He is currently the President of Installed Base Support Services (IBSS) business group at Applied Materials in USA.

After completing his studies, Shri Mahendroo joined the Intel Corporation in 1978 and held a variety of Marketing and General Management positions for products including memories, micro-controllers & microprocessors, single board computers software and system products. From 1989 to 1992 he was the Director of Corporate Marketing and New Product Technologies at Chips and Technologies Company.

Shri Mahendroo joined Applied Materials in 1992 and in the short time there has made an impact far greater than his assigned role. As Head of Corporate Marketing, he took the group from an analysis focused corporate function to an organization that has a leadership role in the company. He developed an Opportunity Assessment process that profoundly changed the way the entire corporation analysis their markets. In January 1995, he was promoted to Vice President Marketing and in September 1995 he was appointed as the President of Applied Materials installed Base Support Services (IBSS), one of the six business units of the company. This group is responsible for the technical support and spare parts infrastructure for more than 9000 wafer manufacturing systems worldwide. The IBSS group is a pivotal one for Applied Materials and represents about 20 percent of the company’s revenue amounting to approximately $ 800 million annually. Shri Mahendroo’s leadership of IBSS has been characteristically marked by outstanding accomplishments resulting in the growth of this unit in revenue and profitability while maintaining focus on customer satisfaction by delivering strongly improved operational performance.

Prof. A.J.Paulraj

Prof. A.L.Paulraj

Professor Arogyaswamy Paulraj received his Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1973 while on deputation from the Indian Navy. Professor Paulraj joined the Indian Navy as a cadet in 1961 and completed courses in Military subjects and Electronics Engineering in 1966, obtaining first rank in both. During his deputation at IIT Delhi, he led the development of an improved version of antisubmarine sonar for the Indian Navy. This project was a significant success and bought much visibility to the Department of Electrical Engineering and helped initiate close linkages with external research and development institutions.

From 1973 to 1983, Professor Paulraj headed a team at the Naval Oceanographic Laboratory, Cochin to develop very large sonar systems (the APSOH family) giving India the most advanced sonar technology. From 1987 to 1989 he supervised the development of a large systems software suite for parallel computers at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Bangalore and concurrently supervised the development of radar and communications systems at Bharat Electronics. He was the founding Director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Bangalore, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Bangalore. He is currently a Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at Stanford University, where he has pioneered the development of a new wireless technology using multiple antennas.

Professor Paulraj’s research has spanned several disciplines, emphasizing estimation theory, sensor signal processing, parallel computer architectures/algorithms and space-time signal processing for wireless systems. He has won about a dozen awards for academic performance and professional contributions including the Ati Vishishth Seva Medal from the Navy in 1983 and the Scientist of the Year Award from DRDO in 1984. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Fellow of the Institutions of Engineers (India), and a Fellow of the Institute of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineers (India).

Dr. Om Parkash Sharma

Dr. Om Prakash Sharma

Dr. Om Parkash Sharma received his B.Tech. and M.Tech. Degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1967 and 1970. He obtained his Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from Birmingham University, UK in 1975 and served at the university until 1977. He then joined Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation (UTC), USA. He is currently the Director Modeling, Analysis, Simulation and Computation for UTC.

Dr. Sharma joined the aircraft industry at a time when manufacturers relied heavily on test data for engine development, which invariably yielded sub-optimal designs. He successfully initiated the utilization of controlled physical and numerical experiments as the preferred approach to evolve physics-based systems for developing aircraft engines. In 1982, Dr. Sharma led a team to develop low loss, 3-D airfoil and end-wall concepts which yielded up to 20% loss reduction for fans, compressors and turbines and are currently used in the design of turbo-machines for aircraft, power generation and space propulsion systems. In 1984, Dr. Sharma led a team to investigate turbine durability problems in an advanced engine and developed hot-streak management concepts resulting in significant increase in the life of mechanical parts. This also provided the potential to increase the turbine rotor inlet temperature by almost 300oF for the same material and cooling air. From 1986 to 1990, Dr. Sharma led the development of high fidelity physics based design system for turbines. His concepts were implemented successfully for the design of turbines for the Alternate Turbo-pump for the Space Shuttle Main Engine, PW4000, F119 and Joint Strike Fighter Engines.

In 1992, Dr. Sharma was appointed as the Chief of Aerodynamics for Fans and Compressors and he led a world class team including technical experts from the UTC, MIT and NASA to advance the state-of-the-art in the compressor design process. The effort resulted in the design and development of a multistage compressor that produced 20% lower losses. This machine is currently flying in Boeing 777 aircraft. His work has made major contributions to the reduced development time for gas turbine engines by a factor of 2 over the last 15 years achieved by focusing on developing physics based rigorous design processes and by replacing a large number of test rigs with limited controlled experiments. In 1995, UTC honoured Dr. Sharma and one of his co-investigators with the Mead Award, the corporation's highest technical award.

Dr. Sharma was appointed as the Senior Fellow of Turbomachinery in 1995 and Chief Aerodynamicist of Pratt & Whitney in 1997. Since 1998, Dr. Sharma has served as Director Modeling, Analysis, Simulation and Computation for UTC. The focus of his team is directed towards achieving a 50% reduction in the cost of development, time-to-market and product warranty costs over the next three years for all of UTC's products.

In honouring Dr. Sharma, we recognize the outstanding contributions made by an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi as a Mechanical Engineer in the area of aerodynamics, specially towards the design and development of improved turbines and compressors for the air craft industry, earning recognition and through his achievements bringing glory to the name of the Institute.

Shri. Vijay Kumar Thadani

Shri Vijay Kumar Thandani

Shri Vijay Kumar Thadani received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1972. He is currently the President & CEO of NIIT Limited, a global IT Solutions corporation, as well as the Chairman of NIIT (USA) Inc.

After completing his studies, Shri Thadani worked as a Product Engineer at the National Radio & Electricals Co. Ltd., Bombay. Thereafter, in 1974, he joined Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd., Trivandrum where he was responsible for the sales and service of consumer & industrial electronics products.

In 1981, Shri Thadani co-founded NIIT along with Shri Rajendra S. Pawar and since then NIIT has become a leader in the IT Solutions arena with a projected revenue of US$ 200 million for 1998-99. He spearheaded NIIT's Initial Public Offering in 1993 and NIIT became the first listed Indian IT Company whose market capitalization crossed US$ 1 billion, in 1998.

Shri Thadani has been leading NIIT's globalization since 1991. He has taken the NIIT Flag to over 30 countries through 20 subsidiaries and three joint ventures. His strategic alliance initiatives have led to NIIT forging around 50 upstream alliances with cutting technology providers like Microsoft and Computer Associates, and downstream alliances with over 750 channel partners. Today, under Shri Thadani's leadership, NIIT is leveraging its unique business model to develop e-commerce applications for prestigious clients in the USA, Europe, Japan and the Asia Pacific region.

Shri Thadani is skilled in translating technology into a language which senior corporate managers can understand and successfully adapt to suit their industry. He has played a pioneering role in converting India's vast reservoir of trained English-speaking manpower in to a global IT resource. Through his unique vision at NIIT, synergising software development and IT training, he has created a knowledge corporation.

Mr. Anil Sood

Mr. Anil Sood

Mr. Anil Sood was born on November 7, 1949 at New Delhi. Supported by a Government of India Merit Scholarship, he started his schooling at Mayo College, Ajmer and then joined Modern School, New Delhi. He was awarded the Gold Medal for being the topper in the All India Higher Secondary Board. Joining Mechanical Engineering discipline in Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Shri Sood graduated in 1971 and was awarded Silver Medal for being at the top of his class. He completed his MS Engineering from Cornell University in 1973 and his MBA from the Harvard Business School where he was honoured as a Baker Scholar for graduating at the top of his class in 1975.

Shri Sood joined the World Bank as part of its prestigious "Young Professionals Program" in 1975 and worked on managing a wide range of industrial projects in different developing countries worldwide. In the early 1980s, he contributed to the Bank's first projects in support of technology development and the buildup of the electronics industry infrastructure in the Republic of Korea. In the mid 1980s, he led the creation and the development of the Bank's methodology and capacity in the areas of restructuring of industry, public sector reform and privatization. From 1987-1992, Shri Sood helped to manage the World Bank's policy and reform dialogue and support to countries in Central and Eastern Europe and, subsequently, the Republics of the former Soviet Union, in their transition toward a market economy. His experience included management positions in Industry and Energy, Finance, Private Sector Development and Economic Management.

In the mid 1990s, he helped to manage the Bank's regional operations (loans, policy, reform, capacity building and advice) across all countries and sectors in Europe and Central Asia. At the same time, Shri Sood was called upon to manage the design and startup of networks of staff (and ultimately, client country counterparts and development partners) in the areas of Human Development, Finance and Private Sector Development, Environment and Social Development, and Poverty Reduction with a focus on strengthening strategy, quality, skills building and knowledge creation and management. He was also responsible for implementing a renewal program in a major part of the Bank.

In 1999, Shri Sood was appointed to his current position as Vice President, Strategy and Resource Management, and carries the responsibility for helping to formulate and support the implementation of the World Bank's worldwide strategy, to allocate and monitor the use of the Bank's resources in support of its worldwide operations, and to build its capability to deliver on its mission to reduce poverty worldwide.

Prof. Govind P. Agarwal

Prof. Govind P. Agarwal

Prof. Govind P Agrawal was born on July 24, 1951 at Kashipur, U.P. A gold medallist from the University of Lucknow in his Bachelor of Science, Prof. Agrawal received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1971 and 1974, respectively.

After holding various R&D positions at the Ecole Polytechnique (France), the City University of New York, and the Laser Company, Quantel, France, Prof. Agrawal joined the technical staff of AT&T Bell Laboratories, USA in 1981 where he worked on problems related to the development of semiconductor lasers and fiber-optic communication systems. In 1989, he joined the faculty of the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester where he is currently a Professor of Optics. His research interests focus on quantum electronics, nonlinear optics and laser physics. In particular, he has made outstanding contributions to the fields of semiconductor lasers, nonlinear fiber- optics, and optical communications. Among Prof. Agrawal's numerous contributions to the field of semiconductor lasers, the most outstanding contribution is his prediction in 1987 of highly nondegenerate four-wave mixing in semiconductor lasers and amplifiers. In 1988 he developed a complete theory of both nearly degenerate and highly nondegenerate four-wave mixing. His work has led to a new method of wavelength conversion with potential applications in multichannel optical communication systems. The technique of wavelength conversion is of tremendous importance in the context of today's very hot topic of dense wavelength division multiplexed optical fiber transmission, which appears to be the only solution available today to fulfil the demand for huge bandwidth posed by the internet revolution and convergence of voice, video and data.

Prof. Agrawal is an author or co-author of extensively cited more than 250 research papers, several book chapters and review articles, and three books entitled "Semiconductor Lasers", "Nonlinear Fiber- optics" and "Fiber-optics Communication Systems". He has also edited the books "Contemporary Nonlinear Optics" and "Semiconductor Lasers: Past, Present and Future".

The three monumental text books authored by Prof. Agrawal have influenced an entire generation of researchers and students in Photonics. The book on "Semiconductor Lasers", first published in 1986, has helped graduate students and engineers in learning the field of laser diodes. The book entitled "Nonlinear Fiber-optics" is the often-cited text covering the entire field of nonlinear fiber optics. It is used widely and has been translated in Chinese, Japanese, and Russian languages. The book on "Fiber-optics Communication Systems" deals with the design of lightwave transmission systems and is used worldwide as the main textbook for courses dealing with optical communications.

Prof. Agrawal has received many honours for his outstanding accomplishments in Science and Technology. He is a Fellow of both the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He has been andcontinues to be on the editorial board of several leading international journals and is serving as one of the Editors for the Academic Press Book Series on "Optics and Photonics" since 1998. He has served on the prestigious Townes and Holonyak Award Committees of the Optical Society of America.

Mr. Hari S. Bhartia

Mr.Hari S Bhartia

Shri Hari S. Bhartia was born on December 12, 1956 at Calcutta. He received his B.Tech. degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 1979 and started his career in business with his family. He has had a key role, in each phase, from conceptualization to successful running of several Vam Bhartia Companies which he has promoted and owns along with his brother. This includes the flagship Vam Organic Chemicals Ltd. of which he is the Co-Chairman & Managing Director. Shri Bhartia has also provided leading thrust for the Group's foray into contemporary and futuristic businesses including Chemicals, Food Services and Information Technology. He has geared his group into an internationalizing mode by achieving strategic alliances and affiliations with some of the leading corporate business houses of the world in the area of Oil & Gas, Aerospace, Trade, Financial Services, Project Engineering and Construction etc. Within a short span of 4 years, Shri Bhartia has established Dominos Pizza India Ltd. as the largest fast food chain in the country. Having steered these businesses through their development, he remains at the helm of their successful running. Through his sustained efforts, Vam Bhartia Group presently has an annual turnover of more than Rs. 1000 crores.

Other than the Corporate Sector, he is also credited with active contribution to a wider environment, particularly through initiatives and personal work dedicated to institutionalization of key developmental processes. He is the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and is leading its thrust into more relevant and progressive relationships with the worlds of Business and Government. He has also contributed actively through deep involvement and lead roles in the Young Presidents Organization Inc. (YPO), a 'non-profit' organization of more than 8000 Presidents and Chief Executive Officers worldwide. He has been Area Vice President (on the Board) as well as Chairman of several roles in its Delhi Chapter.

Shri Bhartia has been Chairman of the Expert Group to Develop Policy initiatives for Technicians' Education through the National Project Implementation Unit, a World Bank assisted project (1998) and Chairman, National Committee on Technical Education & Training for the year 1998-99 of Confederation of Indian Industry. He has been a member of National Technology Council of CII in 1998. He has also been a Chairman, National Committee on Chemicals and Petrochemicals for the year 1999-2000 and Dy. Chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry, Northern Region for the year 2000-2001.

Dr. Hanwant B. Singh

Dr. Hanwant B. Singh

Born during the turmoil of partition, Dr. Hanwant B Singh spent his early years in many cities with the longest stay in Dehra Dun, U.P. where his father was a government official. He joined IIT Delhi in 1963 and graduated in 1968 with a B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering with distinction. A generous fellowship from the University of Pittsburgh and a strong desire to see the world landed him in the United States within weeks of his graduation. He joined the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Pittsburgh in 1968 and graduated with a Masters and a Ph.D. degree in 1972. A change in direction was to follow with a stint at the Deptt. of Environmental Sciences at Rutgers University in New Jersey where he did a postdoctoral fellowship and also taught some courses,. In 1974, he was tapped by the Stanford Research Institute in California (at the time a part of Stanford University) and for a decade he was Director of the Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratory there. In the late 1980's, NASA was successful in convincing him to join the nearby Ames Research Laboratory and lead an effort in studying the changing global atmospheric system with resources that only NASA could provide.

Dr. Singh is an acknowledged leader in the area of atmospheric composition and chemistry, and has contributed major theoretical and experimental ideas to advance the scientific understanding in this field.

His professional life has been highly rewarding and the opportunity to collaborate with some of the best minds from several different countries has been a great privilege. His efforts are chronicled in over 150 scientific publications. A textbook he edited is widely used in many universities. Many honours and awards have followed. He became the recipient of the Frank A Chambers Award for "outstanding achievements in the arts and sciences", the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievements Medal, the H.J. Allen Prize (shared with Nobel Laureate P Crutzen) and was elected to be a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, and certain United Nations Commissions. In 1993, he agreed to take over the Executive Editorship of the international journal of Atmospheric Environment published by Elsevier from U.K. This role allows him unique window into the world of international science. He has travelled extensively but his wanderlust is alive and well.

Mr. Manvinder Singh Banga

Mr. Manvinder Singh Banga

Mr. Manvinder Singh Banga was born on October 31, 1954 and was I.I.T Delhi's Gold Medalist in Mechanical Engineering in 1975. He then joined Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, where too he won the gold medal in the class of 1977.

Mr. Banga joined Hindustan Lever Limited as a Management Trainee in 1977. Upto 1992, he worked in a variety of Sales and Marketing assignments in the Detergents and Personal Care Categories in India including a spell with Lever Brothers, UK. From 1993 to 1995 he was the Head of Hindustan Lever Limited Personal Products Business.

Between August 1995 and end of 1998 he was Executive Director and Head of the Soaps & Detergents Business - HLL's largest business division, and also Unilever's single largest Soaps and Detergent business by volume (1.1 million tonnes) with sales of about Rs. 4000 crores, 12,000 employees and 16 factories. He was also the Category Leader for the Detergents business for Unilever's Central Asia & Middle East Business Group. In December 1998 he moved to the Unilever Head Office in London as Senior Vice President and responsible for the Hair and Oral Care Categories with a total sales value of 2.5 billion. In addition, Mr. Banga led the Company's initiative into mass market foods. A new business model was created which won Unilever's Foods Innovation Award in 1998.

In May, 2000 he was appointed Chairman of Hindustan Lever limited. Today, he is the youngest ever Chairman of India's largest FMCG company and also the largest by market capitalisation, with a turnover of Rs. 11000 crores and close to 40,000 employees. He has achieved this in a company, which is universally regarded for its professionalism in recognizing nothing but only merit. This in itself indicates his exceptional achievement and excellence. Of course, on the road to Chairmanship, he has left marks of his excellence in creating new growth avenues for HLL's existing businesses, establishing altogether new businesses and global strategy formulation for the parent company, Unilever's worldwide business in 88 countries.

HLL has been well known as a company which nurtures talent. He has taken this to new heights. Since taking over as Chairman, he has made several changes to the organisation's structure to provide greater empowerment and make jobs richer, and to push decision-making deeper into the organisation. Mr. Banga lives by the values he is driving in HLL - Courage, Truth, Action and Caring.

Mr. Pradeep Gupta

Mr. Pradeep Gupta

Born on March 8, 1955 Mr. Pradeep Gupta completed his B Tech in Elect. Engg. from IIT Delhi in 1975. Later he completed his MBA from the IIM Calcutta in 1977 and started his career with HCL Ltd. as the head of its Software Development facility in the Eastern Zone. Backed by a pioneering spirit and a few friends he launched in Dec. 1982 'Dataquest' magazine which grew rapidly and till today remains a barometer for the Indian IT industry. This was followed by many other products and services which today make Cyber Media India Ltd. the leader in IT media industry. The company is guided by the philosophy of remaining far ahead of the times. This has helped CMIL achieve revenues of Rs.700 million through its dedicated 350 people. Its products in the field of publishing are Dataquest, PC Quest, Voice & Data, Computers @ Home, DQ Channels India and DQ Weeks.

With changing time and needs Mr. Gupta has propelled the organization into other areas. These include IDC India Ltd. - a market research organization, Cyber India Online Ltd. - which started the era of infotech web publishing as early as 1996, Cyber Multimedia Ltd. which develops multimedia software and was started in 1996, and Cyberexpo Limited - a company which organises computer expos in more than 50 cities across the country. He has now launched the School of Convergence at International Management Institute to train content creators and managers for the emerging convergence economy. He is one of the founders of SQL Star International Ltd. a company engaged in software exports. He has set up an angel fund in partnership with others to provide venture capital to start - ups.

Mr. Gupta was the driver of a strategic consultancy, funded by World Bank, to formulate India's software exports strategy. He was a member of the "Study Team on Microelectronics" for Deptt. of Electronics, Govt. of India to recommend Microelectronic strategies for India. He is also a member of the Working Group on IT for the Government of NCT of Delhi. Soft-spoken and down-to-earth he works and carries forward an approach based on consensus and involvement of all concerned. This has helped in increasing the effectiveness of all the institutions and organizations that he has worked with.

Mr. Gupta has been honoured with many recognitions which include the Hellen Keller Award by National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People, Award for Outstanding Contribution towards National Development by IIT Delhi Alumni Association, Bharat Vikas Award by International Business Council and the Award of Excellence by IEC Software Ltd. Dr. Prabhat K Dubey

Dr. Prabhat K Dubey

Dr. Prabhat K Dubey was born in Rampur in Oct. 1950. He completed his Ph.D. in Physics from IIT Delhi in 1970, and later obtained an MBA from University of Western Ontario in 1978. He spent the intervening years at University of Toronto doing research in semiconductor technology, but before moving to industry in 1979. His middle management career included product planning at Harris Semiconductor and NEC Electronics. Rising to senior management in 1989, Dr. Dubey joined AT&T Microelectronics Division (now Agere Systems ) as Vice President and General Manager of its Digital Signal Processing division. He turned the division around from a highly unprofitable state to a highly profitable one, increasing its revenues seventeen times within 5 years, and thereby gave Agere a 30% share in the worldwide DSP market. This division was the one that enabled Europe to implement GSM cellular telephony, as well as the one to provide multimedia technology for use in Apple Computers.

After AT&T, Dr. Dubey sought new challenges in the emerging data networks industry by joining MMC Networks as its CEO in 1994. Under his leadership, MMC became a leader by creating the world’s first “network processor”. These processors are used by network equipment manufactures, including, Cisco Systems, in their high speed data switches and routers. Riding on this success, he took MMC Networks public on the NASDAQ in 1997. MMC Networks was later bought by AMCC for $ 4.5 Billion in 2000. Dr. Dubey left MMC Networks in 1998 and started working with the venture capital industry. In 1999, he co-founded Force10 Networks, an emerging networking startup in Silicon Valley. Under his leadership, Force10 Networks has launched the world’s fastest data switch.

Dr. Dubey has excelled in building high technology businesses and in corporate leadership. Through his technological acumen, business skills, entrepreneurship, management skills and innovative thinking, Dr. Dubey has made significant contributions In honouring Dr. Dubey, we recognize the outstanding contributions made by him as an entrepreneur and business leader. Prof. Subhash Kak

Prof. Subhash Kak

Prof. Subhash Kak was born on March 26, 1947 in Srinagar. After studying in schools in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, he attended Jammu & Kashmir University, from where he obtained Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1967. Thereupon, he joined IIT Delhi, and completed his Ph.D. in 1970.

For most of 1970s he taught at IIT Delhi, with short stints at Imperial College, Bell Labs, and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He moved to Louisiana State University as a Professor in 1979.

His Ph.D. dissertation was on information theory and communications engineering, areas on which he continues to work. He has worked on cryptography, random sequences, coding, artificial intelligence, and neural networks. He is a pioneer in investigating information theoretic aspects of quantum mechanics. He has also worked on models of the brain from the view point of pattern processing. He has authored over 200 journal papers, numerous essays, and fifteen books. His scientific contributions include one of the earliest patents on speech scrambling and a patent on instantaneously trained neural networks. The latter invention has found applications in time-series prediction and in the design of meta-search engines.

Over the years, he has also become interested in the history of science, especially as it relates to India. He discovered a long lost code in astronomy from early times in India. This has significant implications for our understanding of the rise of astronomy in India. He has also investigated early research in mathematics and linguistics. These studies are documented by him in journals and conference papers and in the following six books, “The Nature of Physical Reality”, “The Astronomical Code of the Rigveda”, “In Search of the Cradle of Civilization”, “The Wishing Tree”, “The Ashvamedha” and “The Gods Within”. In fact, his interests extend beyond engineering and history of science. He has published four books of poetry in Hindi and English, and he is well-known for his literary essays.

His awards include Science Academy Medal of the Indian National Science Academy, Halliburton Award, UNDP Tokten Award, and Goyal Prize. He was also a National Fellow of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla during 2000-2001.

Prof. Chandra S. Vikram

Prof. Chandra S. Vikram

Prof. Chandra S. Vikram was born on October 31, 1950 at Payagpur, U.P. After completing M.Sc. (Physics) in 1968 from IIT Kanpur, he received M.Tech. (Applied Optics) in 1970 and Ph.D. (Physics) in 1973, both from IIT Delhi. His research papers on holographic vibration analysis, and published while he was still a student at IIT Delhi, were well received by researchers from around the world. After a brief post-doctoral assignment with IIT Delhi, Prof. Vikram joined Pennsylvania State University in 1977, where over the next decade, he made significant contributions to ultra-low thermal expansion measurements, laser speckle metrology, particle field holography, non-destructive testing of biological objects, and water tunnel instrumentation. These contributions, documented in the form of published papers, have been acclaimed by researchers throughout the world. In 1989 Prof. Vikram joined University of Alabama in Huntsville as Senior Research Scientist and in 1993 became Research Professor of Optical Science and Engineering. During his current tenure he discovered critical limiting needs of two-color holography for heat and mass transfer studies. He also pioneered the use of Spacelab-III reconstructed wavefronts for multiple unconventional applications. In a parallel development, he established a new method of residual stress measurement by laser heating and speckle correlation interferometry. In addition to advanced academic research, Prof. Vikram is also known for solving contemporary industrial problems. One of his algorithms has recently been adopted in PhaseCam, a commercial interferometric system that is faster and less noisy.

Prof. Vikram has authored the book Particle Field Holography published by Cambridge University Press, and has edited SPIE Milestone Series on Selected Papers on Holographic Particle Diagnostics . He has also contributed six book chapters and authored or co-authored more than 140 research papers.

Prof. Vikram has received Certificate of Recognition from NASA for his work done under its Advanced Technology Programme. He was also awarded the Distinguished Research and Creative Achievement Award by the University of Alabama in Huntsville Foundation. He is a Fellow of Optical Society of America and of International Society for Optical Engineering. He is also a Life Member of Optical Society of India.

Dr. Anoop Gupta

Dr. Anoop Gupta

Dr. Anoop Gupta was born in Delhi on December 15, 1958. He received his B.Tech. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1980 from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Subsequently, he attended Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, where he completed Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1986.

For the next 11 years Dr. Gupta was on the faculty of computer science and electrical engineering at Stanford University. His research at Stanford spanned computer architecture, operating systems, programming languages, simulation and performance debugging tools, and parallel applications. Together with Prof. John Hennessy, he co-led the design and construction of the Stanford DASH (Directory Architecture for Shared Memory) multiprocessor system. This technology has been widely adopted in commercial products. At Stanford, he also led the Virtual Classroom project, where he explored compression and networking issues related to transmitting video over Internet, and use of streaming media technologies for distance education. In 1995, Dr. Gupta used the technology developed in that project to form VXtreme Inc., a provider of technology for streaming audio-visual content over the Web. VXtreme was acquired by Microsoft in 1997.

Dr. Gupta joined Microsoft in 1997 where he led the Collaboration and Multimedia Group. In 2001 he became Technology Assistant to Mr. Bill Gates, Microsoft’s Chairman and Chief Software Architect. In that role, he contributed to several initiatives related to the upcoming release of Microsoft® Windows® operating system, code-named “Longhorn.” He also helped define the company’s strategy for real-time collaboration.

Currently, Dr. Anoop Gupta is a Corporate Vice President of the Real-Time Collaboration business unit. He guides the company’s efforts to provide industry partners and customers with solutions for real-time communication and collaboration. His focus is on tools for information workers, including instant messaging, PC-telephony and Web conferencing.

Dr. Gupta has published more than 100 papers in major conferences and journals, including several that have won awards. With Professors David Culler and Jaswinder Pal Singh, he co-authored the book “Parallel Computer Architecture: A Hardware-Software Approach” in 1998. He is a co-inventor on over 35 patents filed on behalf of Microsoft. His earlier awards include NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award (1990-1995) and the Robert N. Noyce Faculty Scholar Chair at Stanford for 1993-94. Earlier in 1980, he received the President’s Gold Medal from IIT Delhi.

Dr. Gobi R. Padmanabhan

Dr. Gobi R. Padmanabhan

Dr. Gobi R. Padmanabhan was born in Tiruppur, Tamilnadu in October, 1945. He received B.Sc. degree from Madras University and M.Sc. degree from IIT Madras in 1966. Subsequently, he studied at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, where he completed M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics in 1971.

Soon after graduating from IIT Delhi, he joined Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), as a Senior Executive responsible for bringing up India’s first Mask-making Fab. At BEL, he also managed the design, fabrication and testing of India’s first set of CMOS devices.

Since 1978, Dr. Padmanabhan has contributed to the American semiconductor industry in various capacities and in various companies. At Fairchild Semiconductors, he designed and built its Sub-2-Micron Fab facility. He later designed and built CMOS 2-Micron and 1-Micron Fabs for Performance Semiconductors. This experience at Fairchild, Performance and BEL helped him to take National Semiconductors, that was two generations behind in 1996 at 0.6-Micron CMOS, to be at par at 0.25-Micron CMOS in less than 2 years and subsequently to be ahead of the industry at 0.18-Micron in 1999. He similarly used his talent and experience to help LSI Logic become a technology leader in ASIC Technology at 0.25-Micron in 1996. While engaged in building CMOS Fabs for various companies, Dr. Padmanabhan also helped Fairchild and Alliance Semiconductors develop DRAM and SRAM technologies.

Today, Dr. Padmanabhan is a Senior Vice President at National Semiconductors responsible for Technology Strategy and Business Development. In this role, he is responsible for defining the company’s technology road map and policies regarding investments. He also overseas National’s relationship with banking and venture capital community and with universities. Earlier, in his capacity as Senior Director, Research and Development, at LSI Logic, he led their programme on memory yield enhancement. He also helped them transfer process technology that he developed to manufacturing plants in Japan. He holds more than 10 US patents. Many more patent applications have been filed. He has been honoured with top awards from Fairchild Semiconductors, LSI Logic and National Semiconductors for his contributions to a wide spectrum of products, processes, and methodologies. Across the semiconductor industry, he is well known for his pioneering spirit and innovative out-of-the-box thinking.

Shri Vijay Mahajan

Shri Vijay Mahajan

Shri Vijay Mahajan was born in Pune in October 1954. He graduated from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi with a B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering in 1975. Thereafter, he worked at Philips in a marketing position for four years, mostly in Eastern India. His work took him to several industrial project locations in the hinterland. This sharpened his desire to work for India’s development. In preparation for a vocation devoted to rural development, Vijay decided to pursue management studies at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, from where he graduated in 1981 with a gold medal for scholastic performance.

Vijay started work in rural economic development in 1981. Soon after, in 1983, he established PRADAN. PRADAN is one of India’s more effective NGOs, specializing in rural livelihoods and micro-finance. It works with over 1 lakh rural and poor households. Thereafter, in 1991, Vijay decided to work as an independent trainer, consultant and researcher and to focus exclusively on the issue of rural livelihood. Realising the need to attract mainstream financial resources, Vijay conceptualised the establishment of BASIX. BASIX is a new generation institution devoted solely to promoting rural livelihoods. It is among the first micro-finance companies in the world to attract commercial debt and equity investments, both internationally and from within India. From 1996 to March 2003, the BASIX group has extended micro-credit worth over Rs. 150 crore to nearly 90,000 poor households in nine states in India.

Vijay has been an advisor to the Planning Commission, Government of India, the state governments of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Sikkim, and to the RBI and NABARD. Vijay has co-authored a book “The Forgotten Sector” on rural, non-farm sector in India. He has published over 50 articles on rural livelihood, development and micro-finance in international journals. Vija y was honoured by the prestigious Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship as “one of World’s Outstanding Social Entrepreneurs” . As part of this fellowship, Vijay Mahajan participated in the World Economic Forum in January 2003 at Davos, Switzerland.

Vijay Mahajan could have chosen one of many different paths in life and lucrative careers. Instead, he has channeled his talent, education, and energy to improve rural Indian society. In his own words, he has been inspired by several people, including Ravi Matthai of IIM Ahmedabad, Verghese Kurien of NDDB, Prof. Mohammad Yunus of Grameen Bank, Bangladesh and Ela Bhatt of SEWA.
