Papertronic Sensors for Concurrent Bioelectrical and Sweat-based Diagnostics
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering assistant professor and Honors College faculty fellow Aaron Mazzeo is a 2017 recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award. Mazzeo was recognized for his research developing disposable, paper-based electronics with a focus on material processing, characterization, and modeling of wearable sensors to monitor sweat and bioelectrical signals.
The results will complement both commercial and academic efforts to develop non-implantable, highly sensitive, portable instrumentation and algorithms for electroencephalography and sweat-based diagnostics. Techniques for monitoring human alertness and stress will have the potential to improve the safety of individuals and their surrounding environments. The material processing methods and simple-to-share simulations will also impact commercial development of portable immunoassays, brain-computer interfaces for bridging the gaps between machines and humans, and scalable processing of renewable paper products.
As part of this $500,000 grant, Mazzeo will involve School of Engineering and Honors College undergraduate students in hands-on seminars involving papertronics.
