Here at Rutgers, we have over 400 university-wide student clubs and organizations that cater to a variety of student interests and opportunities. For those looking to participate in engineering- specific clubs, Rutgers offers 40 engineering organizations geared towards providing hands-on experiences pertaining to various engineering majors, professional societies, service organizations, and networking platforms. As a freshman, I found student organizations to be a great way for me to get to know the Rutgers community and to channel my free time in a productive and meaningful manner.
One of the organizations that I am actively involved with on campus is Engineers Without Borders (EWB). This is a student organization that focuses on creating sustainable solutions for problems that exist in local and international communities. Currently, I serve as the Guatemala project co-lead which is a project focused on reconstructing a school in Chi-Elias, Guatemala. The existing school structure is unsafe and causes many respiratory issues for the kids that travel over four miles to attend classes. I can’t recall where I first learned about EWB, but I knew that I wanted to be part of a group that made a difference. At EWB, I love being surrounded by like-minded people who share the passion and dedication to a social cause geared towards improving the lives of others through engineering innovations.
Another organization that is near and dear to my heart is the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), a student organization that focuses on empowering women in engineering fields. Currently, I serve as the fundraising chair which allows me to manage the apparel sales and branding of the Rutgers Chapter. SWE gives me the opportunity to interact with a younger generation of girls and encourage them to pursue a career in STEM.
These organizations have given me the opportunity to meet new people who, overtime, ended up becoming my close-knit family in an otherwise large school. Having served in these organizations, I have come to realize the magnanimity of the impact we can make on the communities that surround us.
