School of Engineering Students Take on Accenture Case Study Competition

Business services consulting firm Accenture, in partnership with Rutgers School of Engineering, hosted a case study competition on Wednesday, January 23, 2015, where students applied their analytical and quantitative skills to a unique business situation. Seven teams (28 students) took part in the five-hour competition which also provided students with a glimpse of Accenture’s day-to-day operations and management structure as well as an opportunity to interact with fellow Rutgers graduates now working at Accenture, including recruiters and executive leaders.

For the competition, students were presented with a case example of a $150 million investment, where the client was projecting long-term losses. The client needed advise on whether to enter a price war, acquire local firms, or reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) to increase profitability.

Each team was asked to select one of the options and develop financial models, qualitative assessments, with sound reasoning and methodology, and defend their recommendation via a five-minute presentation to competition judges—Karim Homsany ENG’94, RBSG’95, Accenture managing director, Matthew Hubschmitt, Accenture manager, and Mohsen Jafari, department chair and professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Rutgers University.

According to the judges, the students demonstrated excellent abilities to synthesize data, provide succinct methodologies, and deliver recommended solutions with precision, in very limited time. The winners of the case competition received first-round interviews for summer internships (in accordance with eligibility criteria) at Accenture. Winners included Milap Shah ENG’17, Haris Samim ENG’16, Mohammad Huq ENG’16, and Joseph Greenstein ENG’17.
