On September 21st, 2011, the Nanotechnology for Clean Energy IGERT Program and the Institute of Advanced Materials, Devices and Nanotechnology (IAMDN) took great pleasure in honoring the memory of Professor John Jun Xu (1964-2009) in conjunction with the Second Annual IGERT Symposium. Professor Xu, a rising star in the field of advanced nano‐structured materials for rechargeable batteries and fuel cells, joined the faculty of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in January 2000 as Assistant Professor.
The symposium focused on battery, fuel cell and energy storage research and included presentations from speakers who were part of Prof. Xu’s former group and who continue to work on energy storage materials. A bench was dedicated to Dr. Xu in the courtyard outside the Materials Science and Engineering Department during the symposium. Dr. Chhowalla, the IGERT program’s Director said, “Professor Xu inspired his students to develop new processing routes and structures with real practical applicability.” The IGERT Trainees, who are graduate students at Rutgers and Princeton Universities studying nanotechnology and clean energy, presented posters on their dissertation research. The Symposium concluded on a high note with awards for the three best posters.
