Do you wonder how things work? Do you look at something and think of ways to improve it? Do you think about how to make every day processes more efficient, easier to use, or cheaper? If you do, industrial and systems engineering may be the field for you.

Industrial engineers devise ways to make products and services better, safer, easier to use, less expensive and more energy efficient. Whether it’s shortening the wait time for a rollercoaster, streamlining operations in a hospital or getting products into the marketplace quicker and more cleanly, industrial engineers deliver solutions.

It’s a high-paying field that is expected to grow in a wide range of industries, from aerospace, banking and construction to energy, medical services and the military.

Why Rutgers?

The undergraduate industrial engineering program at Rutgers provides students with a broad engineering education along with specialization in a wide range of industrial engineering and manufacturing fields. We offer courses in work design and ergonomics, optimization, simulation modeling, probability, manufacturing processes, design of engineering systems, facilities layout, production planning and control, and quality engineering and statistics.

Students work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary project teams to find engineering solutions to real-world industry problems. Our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities emphasize robotics, machine vision, manufacturing, automated material handling, quality engineering, electronic and sensor devices, simulation, and computer information systems.

Rutgers offers a Five-Year BS/MBA Program designed to give students a solid business background that complements their engineering courses. We also offer a Five-Year Dual Degree Program that leads to a BS in Engineering and a BA in a liberal arts major.

Study abroad programs, specifically geared to engineering students, are available in many countries in Europe, South America, Asia and Australia.

These programs provide a rich educational experience that produce accomplished engineers and well-rounded individuals.

Hands-On Experience

Students have an opportunity to gain real-world experience in corporate or industrial settings through our co-op Internship Program.

Students earn credits toward their degree and are also compensated for their work. These experiences often lead to full-time job offers after graduation.
